MacRostie Winery Estate in Healdsburg

Tucked into the rolling green hills of the Russian River Valley is one of the most beautiful tasting rooms you’ve ever seen.

Steve MacRostie bought this plot of land back in the 80’s when there were only a handful of winemakers in the area. Since then, they have established themselves as one of Sonoma Coast’s pioneering wineries in sustainability and winemaking.

They’re known mostly for their pinot noir and chardonnay, but also have a special bottle cabernet sauvignon sourced from Napa Valley as well. If you’re a fan of cooler climate, old-world style wines with an innovative approach, then I guarantee you’ll love this place.

Our Visit to MacRostie Winery Estate

MacRostie had been recommended to me by the beekeeper of another winery that I’m a member at, so I already knew that it was bound to be great. After spending the morning meandering around Healdsburg, we decided to drive down and see if they could squeeze our group in.

Thankfully, being a walk in wasn’t a problem at all. Once we were all checked in, we were given a glass of chardonnay to sip on while waiting.

We were eventually escorted over to our table – which was actually a cushy couch overlooking the panoramic hillsides. We snuggled up with blankets and heaters in the crisp spring air and waited to meet our host, Michael.

Upon hearing that one of the members of our group didn’t like chardonnay, Michael made it his mission to prove our friend wrong. And, to his credit, he did exactly that!

Throughout our tasting Michael was immensely engaging; sitting down with us for story after story that brought the wines to life. He brought out topographical maps, poured a surprise vertical tasting, and created entire storybook characters for some of the wines.

As for the wines themselves, each glass was both unique and memorable. I’m personally a big fan of cooler climate and old-world style wines, so these fit my tastes perfectly.

In total, I think our tasting lasted just over two hours. During that time, we never once felt either bored or rushed, which is a testament both to the stunning environment as well as the skills of the staff.

MacRostie Estate is truly one of the best places I’ve discovered in Northern California, and I can’t wait to visit them again soon!
