If you’re planning a trip to Sonoma and are wondering what to wear, I’ve got your weekend style edit covered.

A Go-To Dress

My perfect wine country dress is midi length, loose around the waist, and made from a breezy fabric. It’s all about comfort and practicality with these choices – I always ended up regretting wearing anything shorter or tighter than these by the end the day.

I also tend to pick more neutral prints and colours to make sure that whatever dress I’m wearing pairs with the sweater I’m taking for layering in the morning and evening.

Flat Fisherman Sandals

Unless you’re going out for a very special dinner that you’re dressing up for, wearing heels around Sonoma isn’t a great idea. To fully experience everything, you’ll probably be doing more walking than you’d think, and a lot of it on terrain that is hilly or uneven. I love packing a pair of fisherman sandals in particular because the give a bit of extra stability in navigating all of that.

A Cosy Sweater

I mentioned it earlier, but the mornings and evenings get chilly. If you’re visiting in the winter, you’ll probably have a sweater layered for most of the day, so will want to pack more than one.

Light Washed Denim

Sonoma’s California Casual means that the fanciest you’ll ever have to dress is in a nice pair of unripped jeans. Even at The French Laundry, you’ll often see people in jeans and a nice blouse every night of the week. Pack a pair to wear for dinners out or on days that are on the cooler side.

A Breathable Top

I’ll always pack at least one cute lightweight top in a breathable material like linen or cotton that I war layered under a sweater. The afternoons in Sonoma will be warm enough for short sleeves from Spring through Fall.

A Small Crossbody Bag

A practical option that will leave you with your hands free for taking photos and sipping wine. I like bringing a single neutral option that can work for daytime activities as much as dinner on the town.

A Neutral Sneaker

Great to pack for casual strolls around town as well as any impromptu excursions exploring Sonoma’s outdoors. There are a number of easy hikes throughout the county worth taking to immerse yourself in the redwoods that won’t require more than your everyday sneaker.

Ecru Jeans

A little fancier than the everyday light wash, ecru jeans are worn out here pretty much year round. They’re a great choice for wine tasting, grabbing lunch in town, and heading to the coast for freshly shucked oysters.

A Light Jacket

Did I mention it gets chilly? During the mornings in the winter especially you’ll be glad you brought an extra jacket.

Also be sure to bring:

  • Sunscreen, because Sonoma is too beautiful to be stuck inside.
  • Cash tip for your wine-tasting host, usually $10-20 per person.

And be sure to leave:

  • Any perfumes or products with a fragrance, as they can interfere with a person’s ability to taste wine.
