This exhibition is a curation of abstract pieces by thirty three women, many of which are new acquisitions, covering a wide range of mediums which include sculpture, paint, video, and temporal installations. The exhibition was named for and inspired by Etel Adnan’s recent book, an esoteric meditation on history and existence through a feminine lens.

Stateside, she is most famous for designing Rihanna’s dramatic golden gown for the 2015 Met Gala that took 100 workers over a year to complete. This retrospective looks at her journey from ready-to-wear to haute couture.

I’m really excited to see this collection as Margo from Detroit, and I’ve really enjoyed seeing her work in local galleries in the past. Her weaves intricate textiles with a dream like quality that read like paintings from a distance. Her works are inspired by some of our most pressing social and political conditions, and incorporate non-traditional materials like blankets sourced from disaster preparedness kits.

This opulent adaptation of a Chinese literary classic by Tony award winning composers David Henry Hwang and Bright Sheng tells the story of a young woman who is forced to choose between following love or duty to her family. As fond as I am to Madam Butterfly, I’m really excited to see a Chinese piece told through the lens of actual Chinese artists and creators.
