Hidden in the endlessly beautiful Sierra Foothills, Narrow Gate Vineyards feels like a place where the land and its story are inseparable. The drive there winds through the El Dorado National Forest, the air cool and still, until the trees give way to a quiet estate surrounded by vineyards and towering pines. The European-inspired courtyard, with its rustic charm, invites you to linger and take in the stillness.
As part of my visit to Apple Hill, I visited Narrow Gate for a tasting, and it immediately became one of my most memorable wine experiences. By chance, my visit coincided with the 20th anniversary of their founding—a milestone that added a layer of meaning to the already thoughtful experience. With the owners themselves pouring glasses and sharing their journey toward biodynamic farming, the visit was as personal as it was inspiring.

Our Visit to Narrow Gate Vineyards
The vineyard’s location, surrounded by forested hills, feels like a retreat into nature. Nestled among the trees, the estate balances rustic charm and quiet elegance. Narrow Gate’s European-style courtyard invites visitors to slow down and savor the experience, whether it’s the shade of the towering pines or the warmth of the cozy indoor tasting room.
Frank and Teena Hildebrand, the husband-and-wife duo behind Narrow Gate, hosted our tasting. Their passion for biodynamic farming is evident in every detail, from the stories they shared about creating compost from grape skins and cow manure to their commitment to planting for biodiversity. Their work isn’t just about growing grapes—it’s about stewarding the land they’ve cultivated for over two decades.
The wines reflect this care. Focusing on Rhône-style varietals sourced from Châteauneuf-du-Pape clones, the bottles feel grounded in place. My personal favorite was their estate Syrah: soft tannins, vibrant fruit, and a balance that speaks to Frank’s minimalist winemaking. He uses techniques like whole-berry fermentation and native yeast to preserve the integrity of the fruit and the story of the soil it grew in.
Visiting on the anniversary of their 20th year in business made the experience feel even more special. Frank and Teena took time to share reflections on the vineyard’s journey—from their early days to becoming leaders in biodynamic farming. It was clear that their dedication to sustainability and connection to the land remains as strong as ever.
By the end of the tasting, I was so impressed by the wines (and their hospitality) that I joined their wine club—less of a membership, more of an invitation into their extended family.
TLDR
Narrow Gate Vineyards is a love letter to the land, rooted in tradition and guided by thoughtful, sustainable practices. Their biodynamic approach, paired with minimal intervention in winemaking, results in wines that are vibrant, layered, and deeply connected to place. Whether you’re relaxing in the shaded courtyard or listening to Frank and Teena’s stories, a visit here feels like discovering something truly special. If you’re exploring the El Dorado AVA, Narrow Gate is a destination you won’t want to miss—especially in its 20th year, a testament to their commitment and care.
