How to Get from Shanghai to Suzhou: Complete Transportation Guide

Suzhou is one of the easiest escapes from Shanghai — and one of the most rewarding. Known for its classical gardens, historic canals, and rich cultural traditions, the city is just a short ride away. But with multiple train stations, ticketing quirks, and a few alternative routes, figuring out the best way to get there can feel more complicated than it should.

I’ve done this route myself, and it’s worth getting the logistics right. Here’s everything you need to know about traveling from Shanghai to Suzhou, whether you’re visiting for a single day or staying longer.

High-Speed Train from Shanghai to Suzhou (Best Option)

The high-speed train is by far the easiest and fastest way to reach Suzhou.

  • Travel time: 25–35 minutes
  • Cost: ¥40–80 (about $6–12 USD)
  • Frequency: trains depart every 10–15 minutes during peak hours

Shanghai Stations:

  • Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station — the main departure point, directly connected to metro lines 2, 10, and 17.
  • Shanghai Railway Station — closer to the city center but with fewer options.
  • Shanghai South Railway Station — limited service.

Suzhou Stations:

  • Suzhou Railway Station (Gusu District) — the best choice if you’re heading to the classical gardens or old town. From here, it’s just a 20-minute metro ride (Line 4 to Beisita) into the heart of Suzhou.
  • Suzhou North Railway Station — farther out, but still manageable by taxi (about 15 minutes).

Booking Tickets:
Foreign travelers often find booking a bit tricky because the official China Railway site requires a Chinese ID number. I personally preferred using the WeChat mini app for booking, while my partner found Trip.com easier since it accepts international cards and has everything in English. Either way, you’ll need your passport both to reserve and to physically board..

Tip: Morning and evening trains sell out quickly, especially on weekends. Book in advance if you’re planning a day trip.

Regular Train from Shanghai to Suzhou

Before high-speed rail, this was the standard way to go. It still exists but isn’t ideal unless tickets for the faster option are gone.

  • Travel time: 1–1.5 hours
  • Cost: slightly cheaper than high-speed (¥15–40)
  • Downside: fewer departures, less comfort

Private Car or Taxi

If convenience is your priority — or if you’re arriving on an international flight and want to skip the stations altogether — you can book a private transfer.

  • Travel time: 1.5–2 hours depending on traffic
  • Cost: ¥500–700+ one way
  • When it makes sense: families with lots of luggage, travelers on layovers, or anyone who prefers door-to-door service.

Hotels can arrange this, or you can book through platforms like Klook.

Bus from Shanghai to Suzhou

Technically an option, but not one I’d recommend unless every train is sold out.

  • Travel time: 2–2.5 hours
  • Cost: around ¥40
  • Departure points: long-distance bus stations around Shanghai

With trains being so quick and affordable, buses feel like a last resort.

Getting from Shanghai Airports to Suzhou

From Hongqiao Airport (SHA):
The easiest option. The airport connects directly to Hongqiao Railway Station, so you can go from landing to Suzhou in under an hour.

From Pudong Airport (PVG):
This one is trickier. There’s no direct high-speed train. You’ll need to take the metro, Maglev + metro, or a taxi into the city (roughly 1.5–2 hours) to connect to Hongqiao, then catch a train to Suzhou. All told, it’s about 3 hours. If you’re exhausted or short on time, booking a private car from Pudong to Suzhou is often worth it.

Tips for Travelers

  • Always carry your passport — it’s required for both booking and boarding trains.
  • Book ahead on weekends and holidays; trains can and do sell out.
  • If you only have a day, arrive and depart from Suzhou Railway Station (Gusu) — it’s closest to the gardens and canals.
  • For a longer trip, consider a more scenic approach: arrive by train, then take a canal boat ride to Tiger Hill once you’re in town (one of my favorite Suzhou experiences).
