Last night I got all dolled up and headed to the War Memorial Opera House for San Francisco Opera’s Centennial Celebration. One hundred years, can you believe that!
After collecting our tickets from the box office, we walked into the grand foyer where we were greeted with glass after glass of champagne.
If you haven’t been before, you need to. The building itself is simply stunning, designed in American Renaissance style and host to historic importance far beyond just the arts.
After wandering the halls admiring the architecture and outfit spotting, the sound of the twinkling xylophone ushered us to our seats. For three hours, the stage was filled with a parade of artistry ranging from well-established veterans to emerging stars that meandered through every operatic genre you could imagine.
As the curtain finally fell at the end of the evening, we wandered out into the streets with starts still in our eyes, planning our next visit. SF Opera has a super exciting season coming up, ranging from classics like Madam Butterfly to brand new pieces like El Ultimo Sueno de Frida y Kahlo that we promptly went home and bought tickets for.
Until then, here’s to the next hundred years!
